Are you thinking about purchasing your invitations from Etsy? With thousands of invitations, cute and pretty designs, styles, and colors to choose from, it can be overwhelming. Not to mention all the different invitation designers with individual shops. If you have never done this before, you could be finding that your DIY project is quickly becoming an “Oh why God, WHY” project.
In this article, Victoria will be discussing her top 5 tips you should know about buying your DIY invitation on Etsy. She has been a designer for nearly 20 years and has graduated from the Art Institute with a Bachelors degree in Graphic Design. She has been designing invitations for almost as long.
1. Did you know that not all Etsy invitation shops are created alike? Once you find your perfect invitation, be certain to read the description and store policies before you make your purchase. Some shops offer customization while others offer customizable files. If you are not computer savvy, a customizable file may not be a good option for you. Your purchase could result in an added cost and added frustration. You may not receive your money back if you have purchased one by mistake and have already downloaded the digital file.
2. Did you know that the standard invitation size is 5×7 and that this size fits nicely into an A7 envelope? In addition, the standard rsvp card size is 5×3.5 and they fit perfectly into an A1 envelope. You can purchase envelopes online by Googling “invitation envelopes” or “A7 envelopes”. Or you can purchase envelopes directly from Victoria at www.VGInvites.etsy.com. If you don’t see your desired color, convo her. She is happy to help.
3. If you find an invitation from a shop owner that you absolutely love, ask questions before making your purchase. Note how courteous the shop owner is and how long it took them to get back to you. Most shop owners return your message right away or with in 24 hours. “I like to answer my clients back right away if I receive a message between the hours of 9-5 mon-fri est and with-in 24 hours if it is after business hours.” says Victoria from VG Invites. Also, be sure to check the reviews in their Etsy shop. What past customers have to say (good or bad) will help you to determine if the seller is the right fit for you.
4. Did you know that you can upload the digital invitations that you receive to an online printer such as zazzle.com and receive beautifully printed invites and envelopes in the mail? You can even order just one invitation to make sure that your invitation colors are just right. Note: Make certain that your invitation is the correct format and file size. A 5×7 300 dpi jpeg files in cmyk produces the best looking printed invitations if printing from home, online, or your local print shop. If you are unsure as to what all of this means, Victoria at VG Invites can help and will supply you with the right files for your DIY invitation project.
5. Did you know that the colors on your invitation will print differently than the colors that you see on your computer monitor? I won’t bore you with all the technicalities as to why this is so. In short, your computer monitor displays colors differently than your printed invitation. And all computer monitors are not calibrated alike. The colors displayed on one monitor will be different than that of the next. If color is really important to you, you may want to try printing a sample of your invitation prior to printing the whole batch. This way you can ask the designer if they would be wiling to make a color adjustments for you.
